Our retreats are an embodiment of wellness and luxury, operating in India's most sought after destinations, designed with craftsmanship that offer the stillness and charm of a peaceful retreat and pride of experiencing contemporary hospitality, integrating a seamless blend of regional heritage and culture presenting to its guests what is uniquely Niraamaya Experience.
The story begins in 1982, when Klaus Schleusener came to hear of a stunning promontory flanked by two isolated beaches with sensational views. He roped in Karl Damschen, an architect from Switzerland for the project and transformed a barren hill into an insignia of ancient Keralite architecture with a single octagonal stone house now re-christened as the Octagon House. Later several old tharawads (traditional Kerala Houses) from different parts of Kerala were carefully restored and until this day dot Niraamaya Surya Samudra's sprawling property amidst a coconut grove, clearly recognizing their timeless value and celebrating the heritage of the region. Surya Samudra received the status of Heritage Hotel from the Department of Tourism, Government of India in 1995 and continues to retain this status. In October 1996, the Government of India bestowed upon it, the Tourism Award for The Best Heritage Hotel in India. In 2012, Surya Samudra was rebranded as Niraamaya Retreats - an embodiment of wellness and luxury delivering bespoke experiences for their guests. Niraamaya means 'a sense of well-being' in Sanskrit. All the Niraamaya properties are located in stunning locations and imbibe the philosophy of wellness. The concept of wellness resonates across the retreat – whether it is the spa, yoga or the cuisine at the Niraamaya kitchens. In 2014, Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra was inducted into the prestigious Relais & Châteaux - a global fellowship of individually owned and operated luxury hotels and restaurants
